October Reset

Why Doing Less Might Be Exactly What You Need Right Now

October has a way of making everything feel a little softer.

The mornings are quieter.

The evenings arrive earlier.

The air begins to change.

And suddenly, a cozy blanket, a warm drink, and an evening with absolutely nothing on the calendar sound pretty wonderful.

But here’s the funny thing.

Even when the world around us starts slowing down, we often don’t.

We’re still rushing.

Still planning.

Still trying to squeeze one more thing into the day.

Still feeling guilty when we sit down for five minutes.

And somewhere in the middle of all that doing, we forget something important.

You’re allowed to have a season where you simply live.

Not improve.

Not achieve.

Not reinvent.

Just live.

The Pressure to Always Be Doing Something

When did resting become something we have to earn?

We tell ourselves:

“I’ll relax when the house is clean.”

“I’ll take a break when I finish this project.”

“I’ll have time for myself when things settle down.”

But the house gets messy again.

Another project appears.

And life rarely settles down for very long.

So we keep waiting.

Waiting for permission to rest.

Waiting for the perfect moment to slow down.

Waiting until we’ve accomplished enough to feel like we deserve a quiet afternoon.

What if you didn’t have to earn it?

What if rest was simply part of living?

Not Every Season Is for Growing

We love the idea of growth.

New goals.

New habits.

New beginnings.

And there’s nothing wrong with wanting more for yourself.

But nature doesn’t grow at full speed all year.

Trees lose their leaves.

Gardens become quiet.

The earth rests between seasons.

Nothing is wrong with the tree because it isn’t blooming in October.

And nothing is wrong with you if this season feels quieter than the last.

Sometimes growth looks like doing less.

Sometimes it looks like saying no.

Sometimes it looks like finally listening to yourself.

And sometimes it looks like sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee and not turning the moment into a productivity opportunity.

Imagine that.

You Don’t Have to Fill Every Empty Space

Here’s something I’ve been thinking about lately.

We are very good at filling things.

Calendars.

Closets.

Shopping carts.

To-do lists.

Entire weekends.

If there’s an empty space, we immediately start wondering what belongs there.

But maybe nothing does.

Maybe that empty Saturday morning doesn’t need an activity.

Maybe that blank journal page doesn’t need a profound thought.

Maybe that free hour doesn’t need a chore.

Maybe some spaces are supposed to stay open.

For breathing.

For thinking.

For noticing.

For being.

An empty space isn’t necessarily something missing. Sometimes it’s something you’ve finally made room for.

A Gentle October Reset โœฆ

Instead of creating another long list of things you should accomplish this month, try something different.

Grab your journal and write three headings.

1. What Is Draining Me?

Think about the things that leave you feeling tired, overwhelmed, or stretched too thin.

Maybe it’s a commitment.

A habit.

Too much screen time.

A cluttered space.

Or the expectation that you should be doing everything perfectly.

Write it down.

You don’t have to solve it today.

Just notice it.

2. What Is Restoring Me?

What makes you feel more like yourself?

A quiet morning?

Reading?

Walking outside?

Creating something with your hands?

Talking with someone you love?

An afternoon without plans?

Pay attention to the little things that help you feel grounded.

Those things deserve space in your life, too.

3. What Can I Let Be Enough?

This might be my favorite question.

What if dinner doesn’t have to be homemade every night?

What if the house can be reasonably clean instead of spotless?

What if your journal entry is three sentences?

What if today was simply a good-enough day?

Not every day needs to be extraordinary.

Some days are meant to be ordinary.

And ordinary can be lovely.

The Beauty of an Unremarkable Day

We spend so much time chasing memorable moments that we sometimes overlook the little ones.

The first sip of morning coffee.

Clean sheets.

A favorite sweater.

Sunlight coming through the window.

A familiar song.

Someone laughing in the next room.

These aren’t the moments that usually make it onto a vision board.

But they’re the moments that make up a life.

And maybe that’s worth remembering as the year begins winding down.

You don’t have to make every moment count by accomplishing something.

Sometimes a moment counts simply because you enjoyed it.

Journal Prompt for This Week โœฆ

“What would my life feel like if I stopped treating rest as a reward?”

Take a few quiet minutes with this question.

You might also ask yourself:

  • What am I rushing toward?
  • What could I remove from my schedule this week?
  • When do I feel most peaceful?
  • What does enough look like for me right now?

There’s no perfect answer.

And there’s definitely no deadline.

Your Tiny Challenge This Week โœฆ

Choose one small pocket of time.

Fifteen minutes.

An hour.

An entire afternoon, if you’re feeling particularly rebellious.

And leave it empty.

Don’t schedule anything.

Don’t create a list.

Don’t turn it into a self-improvement assignment.

Just let yourself enjoy the space.

You might read.

You might sit outside.

You might do absolutely nothing.

All three are perfectly acceptable.

Before You Go…

October doesn’t have to be another month of catching up.

You don’t need to rush toward the end of the year.

You don’t need to squeeze every last drop of productivity out of these remaining months.

You’re allowed to slow down.

You’re allowed to change your priorities.

You’re allowed to enjoy your life while it’s happening.

And you’re allowed to have a season that doesn’t look particularly impressive from the outside.

Because sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do…

Is simply be present for the life you already have.

Here’s to slower mornings, quieter evenings, and remembering that you are more than everything you get done.

One breath.

One page.

One gentle day at a time. โœฆ

With warmth,
